Detection systems for high time resolution astrophysics based on advances in lidar technologies

2020
Recent astronomical discoveries of temporally varying objects can be attributed to advances in detection systems for High Time Resolution Astrophysics (HTRA). We present our lab results including the use of analog memories to save bursts of data at subnanosecond resolution. We identify the most efficient detection systems for discovering astrophysical objects with time variability on the order of 1 microsecond to 1 nanosecond. A ground based architecture utilizes an SiPM detection system. For space, vacuum tube photocathode detectors are used to mitigate the effects of space radiation while an analog memory readout system is used to reduce SWaP.
