Scattering type polarizer and liquid crystal display device equipped with same

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a scattering type polarizer which has high mechanical strength and high polarized light transmission properties and is specially preferable as a brightness enhancement film. The scattering type polarizer is formed of a film that contains at least two types of thermoplastic resins and has island-in-the-sea structure with a continuous phase (I) and a dispersed phase (II), the film being oriented in one axial direction. The absolute value of the difference between the refractive index of said continuous phase (I) and the refractive index of said dispersed phase (II) is larger than 0.05 in the axis (S-axis) parallel to the orientation direction, and larger than 0.05 in the axis (P-axis) orthogonal to the orientation direction and parallel to the film surface. The dispersed phase diameter of said dispersed phase (II) in the P-axis direction is 10 to 200 nm. The average polarization transmittance for the measured wavelength of 400 to 700 nm in the P-axis is 80 % or more. The tear strength in the P-axis direction measured in accordance with JIS K7128-3 is 600 N/cm or more.
