Defining Renal Anatomy and Function with 99mTechnetium Dimercaptosuccinic Acid: Clinical and Renographic Correlation

AbstractWe studied renal anatomy and function with 99mtechnetium dimercaptosuccinic acid and 131iodine hippuran in 17 patients with suspected unilateral renal disease. 99mTechnetium dimercaptosuccinic acid gave excellent images of cortical anatomy and there was close correlation of its relative uptake with relative function determined by 131iodine hippuran renography. The morphologic and functional data obtained with 99mtechnetium dimercaptosuccinic acid have potential clinical utility, especially when nephrectomy is being considered.
