Compact triple-band monopole antenna with a wide-slot ground for WLAN/WIMAX applications

2013
A triple-band monopole antenna with a compact size of 28mm×33mm is presented and experimentally discussed for Wireless Local-Area Networks (WLAN) and World Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) applications. The proposed antenna fed by a 50-Ω microstrip feed line comprises a T-shaped monopole radiating patch and a wide-slot ground plane. With the introduction of a wide slot etched in the ground plane, a second resonant mode is excited at around 2.4 GHz for the T-shaped monopole antenna. And the fact that double symmetrical stubs added to the ground plane provide an upper resonant frequency point at 5.8 GHz leads to the achievement of triple-band operation sufficiently covering the standards of WLAN at 2.4-/5.8-GHz and WiMAX at 2.5-/3.5-GHz. Moreover, a prototype of the proposed antenna is constructed and tested showing good performance across the triple-band range with agreeable simulated and measured results of the return loss, omnidirectional radiation patterns and peak antenna gains.
