Primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma of the leg

1996
Cutaneous and subcutaneous leiomyosarcomas are rare tumors, occurring mostly on the extremities. Usually, they appear quite benign. Microscopic examination of the lesion and the use of antidesmin antibodies lead to the diagnosis. Flow cytometric analysis of the DNA content can contribute to the diagnosis. After ocal excision, there is a high risk of local recurrence of cutaneous and subcutaneous tumors, but metastatic spread occurs only in patients with a subcutaneous lesion. Thus, treatment must consist of wide removal of the tumor. We present a case of primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma of the left shin, extending into the subcutaneous tissue.
