Selected properties of furnace waste and carbide lime considering their potential reclamation and environmental management Due to intensive development of power industry and acetylene production from carbide arduous wastes are generated, which are deposited on landfills. In place of agricultural production space unproductive areas emerged, i.e. furnace waste and carbide lime landfills, which are an alien element disturbing the landscape stability. Currently, they require endeavours aimed at either removal of these landfills or at least mitigating their negative environmental effects. Therefore, the investigations were conducted to assess the physicochemical properties of furnace waste and carbide lime considering their potential reclamation and environmental management. Considering admissible concentrations of trace elements in post-industrial areas according to soil quality and earth quality standards for groups “B” and “C” as stated in the Regulation of Minister of the Natural Environment [2002], it was found that the analysed wastes do not exceed the admissible values. On the other hand, basing on 6-degree scale of pollution suggested by IUNG it was found that the investigated landfill samples were characterized by natural content of nickel and natural or elevated contents of chromium, zinc, lead, copper and cadmium. The analyzed waste material may be used as a substratum for plants at reclamation and environmental management of other landfills. However, soil forming abilities of the analyzed material should be additionally supported at the reclamation stage by the use of suitable improving admixtures such as e.g. municipal sewage sludge and full agrotechnological measures should be applied.
