Individual Molecules on GaAs(001)-(2×4) and Si(001)-(2×1): Images, Statistics, and Modelling

This paper brings together the results of three distinct activities in the study of individual molecules on semiconductor surfaces: 1. An experimental study by UHV STM in which molecules can be imaged one at a time on the surface of interest; 2. A statistical analysis of the STM images to determine the effect of the occupation of neighbouring sites on the probability of adsorption; 3. Ab initio theoretical modelling of the geometrical and electronic structure of adsorbed molecules.
