Peppa Pig in China

This research focus origins from an international welcomed preschool cartoon Peppa Pig and try to fill in some blank areas of the Chinese Peppa Pig studies. Through the usage of two qualitative methods to explore Chinese audiencesreception studies of British cartoon Peppa Pig. Qualitative content analysis has been used for understanding audiences’ Peppa Pig reception. After categorizing and coding 100 comments from Chinese audiences, this research found out most Chinese audiences like Peppa Pig, and they like to use an ironic way to express their feelings about Peppa Pig and discussing the plots in a detailed way. Nine semi-structured interviews have been done in order to find out Chinese university students’ audience reception of the original British cartoon and Chinese versions. Chinese university students widely accepted this convert and use it as a symbol to indicate themselves. Non-professional recreators produced some influential dialect Peppa Pig videos, and the combination of naive and tactful can represent part of university student audiences’ identity. Therefore, non-resident Chinese university audiences are using this symbolic cue in this popular culture as social and mediated resource, which can help them show their identity in their social group and identify other people. Meanwhile, this usage also can help to enhance their group belongings and low down their social pressure.
