Abstract 13605: Determinants of Outcomes Following Outpatient Placement of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators in a Medicare Advantage Population

2017
Introduction: Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are effective in preventing sudden cardiac death; factors associated with success have not been clearly defined. Objective: To identify the determinants of 1-year mortality and complications after ICD placement, taking type of implantation into account. Methods: Adult Medicare Advantage patients who underwent outpatient ICD, January 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015, were included. Potential determinants included age, sex, type of ICD placement (subcutaneous/transvenous), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits, cardiac procedures consistent with prior/concurrent pacemaker insertion, bradycardia, conduction disorder, diabetes, and ischemic heart disease, all assessed according to prior year claims data. Mortality, lead-related complications, nonlead complications, and a composite complications measure were assessed at 1 year post procedure. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox Proportional Hazard models were ...
