Figure 1 Gerald Nelson was appointed consultant clinical pathologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, in 1947, but within a few years haematology became his specialty. A pioneer in the automation of laboratory procedures, he was a member of the Department of Health Laboratory Advisory Group and chairman of the haematology subgroup. Clinically he developed a haematology inpatient unit and one of the first outpatient and day treatment facilities. He was responsible for the establishment of the Northern Ireland Haemophilia Centre. In 1971 Queen's University appointed him to a personal chair. Predeceased by a son, he leaves a wife, Hazel; two children; and grandchildren.
