Sedation without hydration came to my notice in 1990. I felt that I had witnessed euthanasia and was dismayed. Others have expressed similar concerns and have called the practice ‘terminal sedation’ or ‘slow euthanasia’ (Billings and Block, 1996; Shea, 2004).
