Synapsins and Synaptic Transmission

ABSTRACT The synapsins are a family of nerve terminal-specific phosphoproteins associated with the cytoplasmic side of synaptic vesicles that interact with various cytoskeletal proteins in a phosporylation-dependent fashion. They are implicated in the short-term regulation of neurotransmitter release and in the maturation of developing nerve terminals during synaptogenesis.
