About a decade ago, multidimensionality came into focus to solve the many, and often complex, problems concerning the provisional identification of analytes of interest, the prevention of co-elution and, also because of the generally felt need to incorporate sample preparation in the total analytical procedure. Here we treat two major branches : hyphenation and coupled-column techniques.
