PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aromatic polyamide substantially free of halogen ions, and in addition, to provide a method for producing the aromatic polyamide which can be easily obtained the aromatic polyamide which inhibits decomposition of a monomer and side reactions, exhibits a high polymerization degree, high heat resistance and rigidity and substantially free of halogen ions when the aromatic polyamide is produced through a melt-polymerization step from an aromatic diamine and an aromatic carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The aromatic polyamide is synthesized through the following steps 1 to 3 in this order under the nitrogen atmosphere when the aromatic polyamide is directly synthesized from the aromatic diamine and the aromatic carboxylic acid, in which the steps include: a step 1: a step of agitating the aromatic diamine and the aromatic carboxylic acid at 130-180°C for 1-2 hours; a step 2: a step of heating 200-230°C and agitating 1-2 hours; and a step 3: a step of heating 300-330°C and agitating 2-7 hours.
