The Centuries Before Computers

For a long time after the Greek era not much happened when it comes to computation. Certainly Chinese mathematicians were active. Some of them continued to compute π to higher accuracy, and in Sect. 3.5 we shall see that they were early developers of direct methods for linear systems of equations. However, their impact on the development of numerical methods for more general problems was not significant.
