Notas acerca del fitoplancton de la Laguna Guanaroca, Cienfuegos, Cuba/Notes on the phytoplankton from Guanaroca Lagoon, Cienfuegos, Cuba

2014
ABSTRACT The Guanaroca Lagoon is part of the only Protected Area of Cienfuegos province, Cuba. Phytoplankton and some physicochemical parameters from six representative stations of this ecosystem were studied in November 2004. Samples were preserved with acid lugol. The abundance expressed as density was determined using the sedimentation technique to concentrate the phytoplankton. All organisms were counted with a binocular microscope using a Sedgewick-Rafter counting cell. In general, high values of salinity, electric conductivity, dissolved solids, chlorides and sulfates were registered. The values of dissolved oxygen were in the rank of 4.75 to 7.66 mg/l and DBO5 values were between 7.0 and 13.2 mg/l. The values of abundance and richness of phytoplankton were relatively low. The highest dissolved oxygen, suspended solids and fitoplancton abundance were registered in the stations 1 and 6, located in the external channel and middle lagoon, respectively. The dominant species were marine dinoflagellates such as Pyrophacus horologium and Scrippsiella trochoidea. Potentially toxic species such as Gymnodinium catenatum and Dinophysis caudata were observed. Key words: Dinoflagellates, phytoplankton, Guanaroca Lagoon, dry periods.
