Breeding of Lilium Asiatic

2020
Lilium Asiatic ‘Tiny Dino’, ‘Elite’, ‘Orange Pixie’, and ‘Partner’ were collected in 2000, then crossed and self-pollinated from 2002 to 2014. In 2016, Lilium Asiatic ‘Orange LiA’ was developed as an F 1 hybrid, as a result of crossing ‘L2-3-4’ and ‘L2-9-6’. It was obtained by a 6th self-pollination of the combination, ‘Tiny Dino’ × ‘Orange Pixie’ for the maternal line, and ‘Elite’ × ‘Partner’ for the paternal line. The ‘Orange LiA’ was tested for homogeneity, regional adaptability, and a consumer preference show from 2016 to 2017. The flower of ‘Orange LiA’ is an orange-colored and bowl-shaped single flower with a few spots of purple-brown color. The number of f lowers per p lant was 4.2, with a f lower diameter of 15.1 cm, which was relatively moderate compared to other cultivars. The flower inflorescence was racemose, while the attitude of the longitudinal axis was erect. The plant height was 30.5 cm, and the leaf length was 8.1 cm. The plant had 23.4 leaves. The ‘Orange LiA’ showed a high preference as a garden plant, because it had a relatively short plant height, and early flowering compared to the control, ‘Tiny Dino’. Moreover, this cultivar has the advantage of being able to reproduce, since the parents are pure lines.
