Study of the reaction between N/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and SO/sub 2/

During our work we have attempted to determine: where a reaction between gaseous N/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and SO/sub 2/ occurs to yield a solid adduct; the conditions under which this reaction occurs; and whether this reaction could be of significance for atmospheric conditions and processes. From the spectroscopic analysis of the mixture N/sub 2/O/sub 5/-SO/sub 2/ it is not clear whether a gas phase reaction occurs when the reactants are completely dry. However there is an indication that a reaction occurs in the presence of traces of water. The correlation between water concentration and rate of reaction has not been determined; and the nature of the compound formed when water is present has not been determined.
