Distribution of Kala-azar cases treated in Delhi

Visceral leishmaniasis or Kala-azar is a major public health problem in Bihar. West Bengal and eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. Delhi, capital city of India which is non-endemic for kala-azar, attracts a large number of people from different States, specially Bihar for various seasons including search for livelihood or treatment. There is no confirmed report of indigenous kala-azar in Delhi. As such, it is highly possible that some of the persons coming to Delhi from endemic areas may establish the infection. In this communication we report the distribution of Kala-azar cases treated in major hospitals of Delhi, during the period 1991*1995. The hospital wise distribution of cases in shown in Table 1.
