Oxidation of commercial steels in gliding discharges reactor

1997
Low-incidence X-ray diffraction, FTIR specular reflectance spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR reflectance spectroscopy, conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy and SEM-EDS analysis have been used to study glidarc oxidation of commercial steels: XC38, 40CAD6-12 steels and Alsl 304, 310, 430 stainless steels. Oxygen plasma treatment induces the formation of two oxides, hematite αFe 2 O 3 and magnetite Fe 3 O 4 , on steels with low alloy content XC38 and 40CAD6-12, and a mixture of two phases on the stainless steels AISI 304, 310 and 430, the hematite and a spinel phase identified as Fe 1+x Cr 2-x O4 for austenitic stainless steels (with x = 1.5 for AISI 304 and x = 2 for AISI 310).
