Pathophysiologic Sequelae of Bronchopulmonary Lavage in the Dog1,2

2015
Eighteen beagle dogs were serially sacrificed after bronchopulmonary lavage of the left lung with isotonic saline. Gross pathologic abnormalities were found for 24 hours after the procedure, and histologic alterations were found for only 48 hours. In another group of 5 beagle dogs, cardiovascular and pulmonary function tests were performed for 7 days after an isotonic saline bronchopulmonary lavage and a sham lavage. No alterations in the physiologic parameters were found after 24 hours postlavage or sham lavage. There was no evidence of chronic sequelae of the lavage procedure.
