Bashō and Otokuni exchanged for about five years between July 1689 and October 1694. Although the exchange was not long, the exchange between Bashō and Otokuni was of great significance to Bashō in his later years. Characteristic of the exchange between Bashō and Otokuni is that the human exchange is very deep. This is illustrated by four letters to Bashō and Otokuni. The contents of the letter describe in detail everything from everyday life to personal things, so you can feel the depth of the human interaction between the two. The exchange between Bashō and Otokuni was also influenced by Otokuni's mother, Chigetsu. Chigetsu had a close relationship with Bashō and worked as a representative writer for Syomon Haikai. Another characteristic of the exchange between Bashō and Otokuni is the literary exchange through Haikai. Bashō had been literally living for a period of about 10 years for his Haikai reform. Otokuni was an active contributor to Bashō's Haikai reform. Otokuni worked hard at Otsu as a literary man for Syomon Haikai and helped develop Bashō's new Haikai theory, Karumi(軽み). He also published Oinokobumi(􋺷笈の小文􋺸), in which Bashō's Haikai spirit was evident, and contributed greatly to the development of Bashō's Haikai. The characteristic of the exchanges in Bashō's letter to Otokuni was the relationship between the friendly human exchanges and the academic exchanges in Haikai.
