Redistribution of the heat flux on the flat surface of a half-cone for variation of the Reynolds number over a wide range

A brief description is given of the method used to measure the heat flux in a shock tube by means of coverings that indicate the heat flux and by means of microthermocouples. The distribution of the heat flux was investigated and some data were obtained on the flow structure on the flat surface of a half-cone at zero angle of attack, when thin separation regions are formed. The experiments were made at Mach number M = 6.1 in a wide range of values of the Reynolds number (R = 1.1·106−25·106) and for M = 5 (R = 106−4·106). It was shown that when the Reynolds number is increased above R ≈ 3·106 appreciable changes in the distribution of the heat flux and the flow structure occur.
