Design considerations for a metal strip surface inspection system

As automatic surface inspection systems evolve for metal surfaces, factors affecting defect detection need to be identified and addressed. At Rautaruukki New Technology a system based on a special illumination unit and a CCD-line scan camera has been developed. The Smartvis system uses a novel image compression technique and an adaptive defect detection method in digital image processing. It also features a high performance defect classification method including knowledge extraction techniques and fuzzy set theory based algorithms. The improvement of man-machine interactivity has been one of the major goals in the development. In this paper the factors affecting the decisions made in system design are discussed.
