ITER electrical distribution system

2013
ITER is a representative prototype of a fusion power plant. It contains most of the features and systems that are anticipated in a fusion reactor and will produce substantial fusion power (500 MW) for long periods of time (100's of seconds). Therefore its electrical power loads are generally representative of those which will exist in future fusion facilities such as a pilot plant, DEMO, and beyond. In this paper the power and energy demand by the PPEN and SSEN systems will be described, along with a discussion of their effects on the grid. The SSEN consumed power will be analyzed with an accounting of the load attributable to each ITER subsystem during the various ITER plant operating states including seasonal variations. The forecasted energy consumption and real-time energy management methods will be discussed.
