Case series: First 6 cases of ongoing randomized controlled trial on the effects of the introduction of a Cardboard Baby Box in the promotion of safe infant sleep practices in a sub-urban community of Santo Domingo, Ecuador

Background: The cardboard Baby Box is a simple bassinet used to decrease bed-sharing. A study from Temple University showed that the use of baby boxes, along with face-to-face education, reduced the rate of bed-sharing by 25% in the first week of life. Health care staff in Santo Domingo report high proportion of bed sharing and unsafe positions to sleep presumptively associated to cultural tradition and lack of availability of bassinets and poverty.
