Yes, male physicians should care for adolescent females

1999
Recent studies show a general trend of patients preferring physicians of the same gender. These gender-related preferences are expressed most strongly among female patients less than 20 years old. This same-sex physician preference also increases when the patient-physician encounter requires a genital examination discussion of personal issues or counseling. Young women seeing physicians are routinely asked personal questions regarding school performance friendships romantic relationships family dynamics substance abuse and sexuality. Depending on the patient one may also require counseling or a pelvic examination. What does this mean for male physicians who are personally and professionally committed to caring for young female patients? Is there a need or role for them as more women complete medical school and pursue careers in pediatrics family practice and obstetrics/gynecology? (excerpt)
