Liquid and solid 4He near a graphite wall
1987
We describe two experiments on the properties of 4He near the surface of graphite. In the first experiment, we measured the growth of solid 4He on the surface as a function of the pressure in the liquid. In a second, recent experiment we attempted to observe the melting of this solid layer as the temperature was raised. In addition to melting, we observed another, more dominant effect, which we interpret as a possible penetration of 4He into the graphite.
