An environmentally friendly film formed on copper: Characterization and corrosion protection

2015
Abstract The formation of a protective layer of γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (γ-APS) on copper is studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR and DRIFT), gravimetric chemical (Weight loss) and electrochemical (Potentiodynamic polarization) measurements. By simple immersion in the γ-APS hydroalcoholic solution (90/5/5, v/v ethanol/water/silane), this silane immediately physisorbed on copper, but the protective effects are very poor. Contrary to the fresh and aged specimens, after heat treatment (curing or aging-curing), the γ-APS adsorption is more a chemisorption than a physisorption. The Si O Si chains peak, the protective efficiency ( P EF ), the full passivation range ( ΔE ) and the durability of the silane film increase from fresh
