Real-Time Processing and Monitoring in Health Care

2020
Extensive research has been carried out in healthcare systems using Internet of Things (IoT) to make healthcare applications more efficient. In these applications, decisions need to be taken quickly and it requires real-time processing of data. Information gathered by different sensors (end devices) in IoT-based healthcare applications culminate to big data and are stored in cloud. Cloud platform processes the data and it needs higher network bandwidth and lower latency. An efficient network architecture is required to achieve this; otherwise, the application may produce ineffective results and may adversely affect the stake holders. Fog computing is considered to be a viable solution to achieve the requirements of IoT-based healthcare systems. Fog computing can enhance real-time data processing and storage. This chapter summarizes the issues and challenges associated with fog-based IoT-enabled healthcare system. It also focuses on remote patient monitoring, using 6LoWPAN. Analysis of various communication protocols is also discussed.
