IELTS-Oriented College English Teaching Design from the Perspective of Multimodality

IELTS-oriented College English aims to foster student’s comprehensive abilities including basic expressing, cross-cultural communication and critical thinking, which cannot be achieved by traditional teaching designs. Multimedia technology and multimodal theory can provide some solutions. The teaching design based on multiliteracies pedagogy from the multimodal perspective helps to instruct teachers to utilize different modes to create situated practice for students, enhancing their learning experiences. Meanwhile, it can benefit teachers and students by means of overt instruction, critical framing and transformed practice. Hence, the whole teaching design not only employs different modes, but also applies multiliteracies pedagogy to cultivate students’ multiliteracies ability, increase students’ agency in learning and pave the way for students’ future study abroad. The research shows that students’ abilities of oral and written expression and discourse comprehension have been considerably enhanced, and their participation and initiative in class also greatly improved.
