The emerging Cloud-Mobile convergence paradigm for next-generation VR systems: Message from the CMCVR 2010 organizers

2010
Pervasive environments feature settings that are radically different from those traditional VR systems were designed for. To name a few of such settings, high mobility, slim device form factor, limited processing power, and constrained battery life. Developing VR systems to be used in pervasive environments is thus both attractive and challenging. Having worked on VR and pervasive computing for some years, we believe that the convergence of cloud resources and mobile devices is a key to create the user experience for next-generation VR systems, which will be densely deployed and used in the pervasive environments. As a consequence, we have organized the Cloud-Mobile for Virtual Reality (CMCVR) workshops in conjunction with IEEE VR conferences during the past two years. Being an emerging paradigm for the VR community, CMCVR has received growing attention and successfully stimulated research interests. In this report we present the background of CMCVR, activities of the CMCVR workshops, related research endeavors in other communities and venues, and our future plans.
