This paper seeks to analyze historically the travel iconography of the soldier and amateur painter Hermann Rudolph Wendroth during his stay in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the second half of the nineteenthcentury. It uses images as the subject of analysis, as it attempts to understand the place of icons in historical research. It starts from the theoretical assumption that images mediate reality rather than reflect it.
