Prostate Cancer Targeted Therapy

2016
Prostate cancer is the leading type of cancer and second leading cause of cancer related death among men in Western world. Initially, the conventional treatment involving androgen deprivation therapy alleviates the disease temporarily but eventually results in recurrence of highly aggressive and castration-resistant metastatic cancer, for which no curative therapy exists currently. Thus, there is an urgent need for new therapeutic approaches to be developed for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer. In the last decade, much has been learned about molecular pathways and biological mechanisms of prostate cancer progression and this provides a number of options for potential therapeutic targets, such as those directed against the cancer cell itself, or against tumor ▶ angiogenesis, cell signal pathways, and bone metastasis. Increasing evidence has emerged indicating that targeted therapy holds promise of providing novel and effective treatments to advanced prostate cancers.
