GPS Data as Source for a National Travel Time Database

2009
In 2008, The Danish Road Directorate (DRD) finalized a pilot project studying the possibilities of using global positioning system (GPS) data in transport planning. The pilot is using GPS data collected from existing fleet management systems to avoid the costs of equipment and communication. The GPS data needs preprocessing, data wash, map matching, detection of planned stops and trips before the data can be used for analysis. The pilot study has analyzed 120 million sets of GPS data and has resulted in a travel time database for major roads in Denmark with travel speeds varying on a half hour basis.
