ESPARZA, M. y M. A. TIEBAS, 1990: Nueva tecnica de lucha contra el Taladro del esparrago Parahypopta caestrum (Hubner) por medio de insecticidas granulados. Bol. San. Veg. Plagas, 16 (1): 205-211. A new technique in chemical control of asparagus borer Parahypopta caestrum (Hubner, 1822) in Navarra (Northern Spain) is described. At present it is the pest that accounts for the greatest yield losses in this area, about 280 Tm per year, valued at some 689.230 ECU. Until recently the chemical control consisted of spraying the plantations with active ingredients such as AZINPHOS, CARBARYL, etc., aimed to the spear-soil contact point. These treatments used large quantities of liquid, 2000 to 2500 litres/Ha so that it may reach 5 cm depth and applications were made at 10 day intervals. The new control system may be applied with granulated insecticides in two ways according to the growth stage of the crop: a) in young plantations which are in growth stage the granules should be located at the stem basis; b) in production crops, the latest harvest day the ridge will be broken and then the granules spread in 20-30 cm width and incorporated 5-10 cm. A single treatment is enough to control the pest with this method. The product tested has been ETHYL-CHLORPiRrPHOS at 0,75-0,9 Kg, a.i./Ha located on the crop row.
