The Relation Between The Properties and Structure of Coated Paper

The effect of argon ion etching pretreatment to observe the inner structure of coated paper by SEM was reported previously (The 61 st Pulp and Paper Research Conference of Japan Tappi, 1994). The application of this technique to commercialcoated papers is reported in this paper.The coated layer structure, especially pigment distribution and arrangement, was observed clearly by this technique. Based on the SEM observation for 21 kinds of commercial coated papers, this paper discusses the relationship between those structure and properties, e.g. Print gloss, Dry pick strength and Blistering resistance.
