Mining the World University Rankings from Wikipedia

2020
Global university rankings have played a growing role in the competition for status which has become one of the important evaluation conditions of higher education quality. At present, the evaluation system of global university ranking is well established and comprehensive, but the work is tedious, and a large number of academic materials need to be collected. In this paper, we use PageRank, Hits and PHrank to rank world universities based on the knowledge of Wikipedia. Wikipedia-based university rankings reflect the perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds on university rankings, reflecting academic and historical impact of universities. Experiments show that the Wikipedia university rankings provide a certain overlap compared with the existing world university rankings. Besides, Wikipedia university rankings attach more importance to the overall economic and cultural contributions of universities and make up for some of the deficiencies of ranking index system.
