Virtualize the Lab, Close the Warehouse

Operations Centers deploy many systems onto virtualization platforms due to cost savings and flexibility. The same factors apply to the development of those systems, amplified by the need to support multiple releases of multiple programs with a relatively fixed size team. Relatively large populations of virtual machines can be maintained as quiescent disk images, run only on demand, sharing a relatively small amount of hardware infrastructure. Careful planning and monitoring are required to succeed.
