Expanding reactor facility usage for public education about nuclear energy

1995
The University of Florida training reactor (UFTR) is a 100-kW light-water-cooled, graphite-and-light-water-moderated argonaut-type university reactor in a loop configuration. Since first licensed at 10 kW in 1959 and then at the present 100kW limit in 1969, this facility within the nuclear engineering sciences department has been actively involved in a broad but ever evolving spectrum of activities and programs serving the regional needs of Florida and the Southeast for reactor usage in education, training, research, service, and public information. The UFTR mission in the diverse public education arena has been very successful.
