Computation server architecture and advanced functions for distribution control centers

2012
The development of the Dispersed Generation (DG) connected to Medium and Low Voltage distribution networks requires new planning and operational tools. The Distribution Company takes the role of Distribution System Operator (DSO) that has to manage the network from many points of view; regarding the operational topic, DSOs need advanced tools to manage electric grids with respect to security, reliability and quality constraints, and to improve the Hosting Capacity (HC) of the system. To fulfill these goals, it is necessary to estimate the state of the network in different operating conditions, taking also into account the impact of the DG. Moreover, the new standard framework requires to the DG the provision of ancillary services. In particular, the generating units have to give reactive support. The INGRID project represents a tool suitable for the estimation of the distribution network operating conditions and for the reactive power dispatching. The project is the result of a collaboration among Politecnico di Milano, SIEMENS SpA and Universita degli Studi di Milano.
