A CLINICAL STUDY OF CONTINUOUS SUTURING TECHNIQUE IN ABDOMINAL WOUND CLOSURE USING MONOFILAMENT ABSORBABLE SUTURE

1994
In order to prevent postoperative incisional hernia and suture sinus, abdominal wounds were closed by continuous suturing technique using monofilament absorbable sutures in 79 patients undergoing lapalotomy between July 1990 and April 1992. There were 48 men and 31 women, with a mean age of 57.6 years. An averaged follow-up period was one year and 10 months. Monofilament absorbable sutures used here were either 1-polydioxanone (1-PDS) or O-glycolyde trimethylene carbonate (O-Maxon), and glycolyde trimethylene carbonate was more benefical due to its looped structure. In postoperative follow-up periods from 12 to 31 months, neither incisional hernia nor suture stinus had been observed. Continuous closure of abdominal wounds using monofilament absorbable suture appears to be effective in the prevention of postoperative incisional hernia and suture sinus.
