Acupuncture Combined with Other Therapies for Hyperpyrexia in Children with Acute Upper Respiratory Infection: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2011
Objective To observe the effects of acupuncture combined with other therapies in treating children's hyperpyrexia caused by acute upper respiratory infection(AURI).Methods A total of 150 AURI children were averagely randomized into acupuncture treatment group and western medicine treatment group.Patients in the acupuncture treatment group were treated with acupuncture at unilateral "Siguan" acupoint, bloodletting in ear tips, cooling with tepid sponge bath;while patients in the western medicine treatment group were treated with ibuprofen suspension, external pyretolysis patches and alcohol sponge bath. After the treatment, such indicators were observed as the time of pyretolysis, the time of fever attack again during 24 hours, convulsion times, the duration of cough, the time of appetite recovery,as well as the time of AURI attack once again during 3 months. Results There was significant difference in above-mentioned indicators between the two groups(P0.05).Conclusion For AURI induced hyperpyrexia, acupuncture can significantly decrease the time of pyretolysis, convulsion times, the duration of cough, and the time of appetite recovery;meanwhile,it can significantly prolong the time of fever onset once again during 24 hours, and the time of AURI onset once again during 3 months.
