A review of the Irish inquiline Cynipidae (Hymenoptera).

2010
O'Connor (2004) reviewed the Irish gall-causing Cynipidae. Since then Callirhytis bella (Dettmer, 1930) has been added to the Irish list (O'Connor 2009). However, some cynipoids (Synergini) inhabit the galls of the other Cynipidae and these were not included in O'Connor (2004). The females oviposit into the developing galls and their larvae exploit the food supply of the gallcauser. Some species develop inside the gall without coming into contact with the host. Other species may kill the host as a result of competition after the egg was laid in the host's larval chamber or close by. In neither case has the inquiline set out to feed on the causer directly as in parasitism (Noyes et al. 1999, Williams 2007). This paper lists the known Irish inquiline species and presents new county records. The material was identified using Eady and Quinlan (1963) and Williams (2007). Voucher specimens are deposited in the National Museum of Ireland. The following abbreviations are used: JPOC J. P. O'Connor, МАО С M. A. O'Connor, PA P. Ashe and SW S. Wistow.
