The thromboxane A 2 pathway and aspirin resistance

2003
Arachidonic acid is the precursor of prostaglandins, which plays a pivotal role in blood and vascular homeostasis. Thromboxane A 2, a metabolite of arachidonic acid, which mediates platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction, has been the target of anti‐thrombotic therapy for many years. However, a significant amount of data suggests that the efficacy of aspirin in the inhibition of thromboxane A 2 production is variable among the population. This review focuses on the thromboxane A 2 pathway and explores possible mechanisms involved in aspirin resistance and their clinical implications.
