The Interaction of Bacteria with Pulmonary Surfactant
1972
Common organisms that were unable to manufacture or metabolize lecithin caused no alteration in the surface activity or fatty acid pattern of lecithin. A reduction of surface activity by microorganisms of crude pulmonary extract or phospholipid fractions appeared to be due to an inhibition of activity by the less surface-active phospholipid components that bacteria produced.
