Herpesvirus type 2 in genitourinary tract infections

1973
Six of 8 patients with herpes genitalis were found to have herpesvirus in the urine. All patients with viruria experienced dysuria while the 2 patients with recurrent lesions and no dysuria did not have virus in the urine. The virus was recovered primarily from the cells in the urinary sediment. The observations suggest that dysuria associated with herpes genitalis may be caused by herpetic cystitis.
