The article raises the question of how the definition of residual life of monuments of history and culture. The paper considers the complex concept of residual life of buildings and structures. The basic approaches to the determination of residual life as physical and mechanical characteristics of buildings and structures, identified their main points, advantages and disadvantages. Considered in detail the approach determining the residual life of buildings, based on the principle of "safe use technical condition." Highlights the key parameters of technical condition, possible to determine the remaining life. The basic methods of calculating the residual resource to limit state criteria. The basic disadvantages of the above methods and the limitations of their use for historical and cultural monuments. A possible solution to this problem by developing a comprehensive methodology that takes into account all the shortcomings of currently available methods of residual life assessment.
