Dr. Peter Libby from Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital moderated the topic "What Do the Newer Trials Tell Us About the Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease?" with Drs. Spencer King from St. Joseph's Heart and Vascular Institute and Carl Pepine from University of Florida participating. The discussion focused primarily on: (1) late-breaking trial data challenging the notion that invasive revascularization reduces cardiovascular events and improves outcomes, (2) management of stable and acute forms of CHD, (3) interventional and pharmacologic approaches, including interpretations of trial results and limitations, (4) the need for new biomarkers and the measurement of ischemia as predictor of ACS, (5) percutaneous intervention, (6) emergency response systems to reduce "door to balloon" time, (7) practical considerations concerning therapeutic treatment in the emergency room, (8) medical non-interventional approaches as initial therapy.
