La cronicidad en los tiempos del cólera o la diabetes como ejemplo de lo que no hay que hacer: diabetes y covid-19

2020
The increased life expectancy of the Spaniards and the improvements in the public health and health care, together with the economic level of our country has changed the characteristics of the health needs of the inhabitants and has consolidated chronicity as the dominant epidemiological pattern in Spain1,2. Diabetes mellitus is possibility the most chronic disease present in the different Chronicity Care Strategies contemplated by the regional communities. The approach to this problematic area is possibly one of the unsolved challenges in our country and one that requires the participation of all the society. Multiple social, economic, territorial, demographic or legal type factors hinder its development, with a clear example found in the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Persons with chronic conditions are more vulnerable to the contagion and to the developing of complications and greater deterioration in their quality of life. In the post-COVID-19 era, a reorganization is proposed of the care regarding chronic disease that provides a response to the real needs that have arisen and to the weaknesses of the health care system organization.
